The national media is throwing some love to Dallas this week on two of our favorite food topics: pizza and bagels.
Robb Report says Partenope Ristorante, a Neapolitan-style pizzeria in downtown Dallas, is the 16th best pizzeria in America, among their list of 50. And Bon Appétit went on a mission to find great bagels and picked Starship Bagel — which has shops in Lewisville and downtown Dallas — as one of the United States’ best.
Efficient foodies with busy calendars, here’s an idea: Starship Bagel, at 1520 Elm St. in Dallas, and Partenope Ristorante, at 1903 Main St., are 0.2 miles apart. Bagels for breakfast, pizza for lunch, and boom boom, you’ve tried two highly-ranked small businesses in the span of a few hours. Sounds delicious, right?
Let’s dig in to the rankings:
On the Robb Report’s annual pizza list, Partenope moved up one spot, from 17th in 2022 to 16th in 2023. Bravo!
For two years, RR’s list has been topped by restaurants in New York, New Jersey and San Francisco. For a Texas pizzeria to make the list, period, feels like an achievement. Partnenope comes from Italian-born Dino Santonicola, who helped make Neapolitan pizza popular in Dallas when he was the former pizzaiolo at Cane Rosso. Santonicola struck out on his own with his wife Megan in 2019, and the two have plans to open a second Partenope in Richardson this year.
If you want to learn to cook like chef Dino, mix and roll dough at one of his Saturday afternoon pizza-making classes. They’re fun.
Partenope was the only pizza joint in D-FW on RR’s list. One other Texas shop was named: Il Forno in San Antonio, at No. 24. See the list here.
Partenope Ristorante is at 1903 Main St., Dallas.
On BA’s unranked best bagels list, the magazine notes “there’s never been a better time to eat bagels.” Bagels have been great for a long time, in a lot of places. But in Dallas? It’s prime bagel time. Shug’s Bagels on Mockingbird Lane in Dallas (plus a coming-soon Shug’s on Lemmon Avenue) should be considered one of the highest-profile bagel shops in town. But BA passed it by for the newer Starship Bagel, which comes from a Brooklyn-born chef.
“There’s a precision to everything that comes out of Starship’s two locations,” writes BA contributor Diana Spechler. “For instance, [owner Oren] Salomon tested 120 versions of the spice blend za’atar before choosing one for the za’atar bagel. For a jalapeño schmear, the team partially ferments jalapeños, achieving just the right balance of heat, sweetness, and crunch.”
Starship was the only bagel shop in Texas named by BA. Read the list here.
Starship Bagel shops are at 1520 Elm St., Dallas, and 1108 W. Main St., Lewisville. Open seven days a week, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
