MLB draft central: Everything you need to know about the Texas Rangers’ 2020 class

A look at each of the Rangers’ five selections in this year’s draft.

The Texas Rangers went back to the infield well in the first round of the 2020 MLB draft.

After selecting Texas Tech third baseman Josh Jung with its first pick in 2019, Texas landed Mississippi State second baseman Justin Foscue with the No. 14 pick this year.

The draft kicked off on Wednesday night with 37 selections being made over the first round and Competitive Balance Round A.

Shortened from 40 rounds because of coronavirus pandemic, the draft will conclude Thursday night with Rounds 2-5 for total of 160 players selected. The draft resumes at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN2.

Players not selected in draft can sign with major league teams beginning on June 14.

First round, No. 14: Mississippi State second baseman Justin Foscue

Second round, No. 50: Elizabethton High School (Tenn.) outfielder Evan Carter

“Evan Carter is someone who could have -- with his size, his tools, and being from a small town -- been on the radar of teams had there been baseball this spring,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan said on the network’s broadcast of the draft.

“But the Texas Rangers saw Evan Carter. They believed that there were a couple of other teams that were going to potentially poach him in between now and the third round.”

Third round, No. 86: Pine Forest High School (Fla.) RHP Tekoah Roby

Roby, 18, has a career 1.34 ERA with 185 strikeouts in 135 innings pitched in high school. He was on Perfect Game’s 2020 Preseason First Team All-Florida roster and is committed to Troy University. He stands at 6-1 and weighs 185 pounds.

Fourth round, No. 115: Central Catholic High School (Ore.) LHP Dylan MacLean

MacLean, a University of Washington commit, was a 2020 Perfect Game Preseason All-West Region First-Team selection. He also threw for the Portland, Ore. team in the 2015 Little League World Series. He’s 6-0 and 180 pounds at 17 years old.

Fifth round, No. 145: Carlsbad High School (Cali.) SS Thomas Saggese

Saggese is a San Diego area infielder committed to Pepperdine. With his selection every Rangers officially went with entirely high school players for the second day of the draft. The California shortstop rose up draft boards late and has been described as a pure hitter.
