THSCA opposed to Big 12′s increase of Friday-night college football games

The Big 12 is scheduled to play four Friday night conference games this season.

HOUSTON — Last week, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark talked about how his conference wants to add more weeknight games, particularly on Fridays.

That didn’t sit well with Joe Martin, executive director of the Texas High School Coaches Association.

“We are certainly opposed to that,” Martin said. “That is something that was shocking for us to read. It’s about TV money.

“We want to keep Friday night pure in high school football. We’re so different from everybody else. Our communities still go and support our teams. Any other football, whether it’s Division I or NFL, that is out there on Friday night, we’re opposed to that.”

The Big 12 is scheduled to play four Friday night conference games this season. Last year, Florida played Florida State on a Friday and Sankey said that the schools were told to ask the Florida High School Athletic Association for approval to play on that day.

“I’ve expressed concern about the migration of colleges into Friday night. We’ve got colleges playing on Friday night for TV windows,” Sankey said. “We had better think carefully about our impact on high school football. I encourage more attention to high school football.”
