Man jailed since December is named suspect in girlfriend’s 2020 slaying in Hood County

Richard Anthony Metten, 33, faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Andrea Stinson, 31.

Hood County officials say a 33-year-old man held in the county jail since December on unrelated charges has been identified as a suspect in the 2020 slaying of his 31-year-old girlfriend.

Richard Anthony Metten was arrested Dec. 30 for a bond violation in an aggravated robbery case, court records show. He now faces a murder charge in the fatal shooting of Andrea Stinson.

Authorities found Stinson fatally shot Nov. 15, 2020, in a shed next to the house she shared with Metten in Granbury, the Texas Department of Public Safety said. Stinson was supposed to pick up her three young children that afternoon and failed to show up, according to the DPS.

Officials did not say how they identified Metten as a suspect in the slaying; the DPS had previously noted that he was cooperating with law enforcement.

“Investigators have worked tirelessly to bring a successful resolution to this case and today’s arrest marks a notable step in that progress,” Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds said in a written statement Friday.

Stinson’s family told KXAS-TV (NBC5) they had a feeling that Metten was responsible for her death.

“You know, it’s a relief,” said her father, Joe Brinlee. “Is it closure? No. I can’t say it’s closure, but it is a relief knowing that he is off the streets and hopefully will never be back on the streets.”

Metten’s bail has been set at $1 million on the murder charge, and it’s unclear whether he has an attorney in that case. He also is being held on charges that include aggravated sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault of a child and trafficking of persons.
