New ‘Sounds of Deep Ellum’ album has live cuts from 10 North Texas bands

The vinyl LP marks the Dallas neighborhood’s 150th anniversary with songs recorded live at Trees.

Deep Ellum is marking its 150th birthday with a musical party favor.

Sounds of Deep Ellum comes out July 14 as a vinyl LP, featuring songs recorded live at Trees in October by 10 local acts: Lorelei K, Maya Piata, Cure for Paranoia, Memory Shivers, Stone Mecca, Flower Child, Skinny Cooks, Children of Indigo, Labretta Suede and the Motel 6, and Ducado Vega.

To help spread the word, musicians will branch out into other Dallas neighborhoods: Vega performs July 14 at a launch event at Spinster Records in Oak Cliff, and six acts will team up for a record-release concert July 29 in the Cambridge Room at House of Blues near Victory Park.

The LP — available at Spinster Records and its website — is the brainchild of Deep Ellum 100, a nonprofit formed during the pandemic to support the neighborhood’s artists, musicians and workers. Spinster is hosting a Sounds of Deep Ellum listening party on July 14 at 7 p.m.

The new album is a nod to The Sound of Deep Ellum released decades ago. In 1987, New York-based Island Records gave the Dallas music scene a huge boost by issuing a 10-song vinyl sampler of up-and-comers like the Reverend Horton Heat, the Buck Pets and the New Bohemians. Before long, national talent scouts were booking flights to Big D.
