Loan servicers are the companies that the Department of Education assigns to borrowers to handle billing and other federal student loans services on its behalf. Borrowers aren’t charged for this.

Such companies work with borrowers to figure out repayment options and can help with other questions related to federal student loans.

Borrowers can log into StudentAid.gov — and scroll down to the “My Loan Servicers” section found in the account dashboard — or call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 to find who their loan servicer is.

It’s imperative for borrowers to log into the student aid account to make sure their contact information is up to date to receive any communication from loan servicer companies.

Borrowers should never pay an outside company for help with their federal student loans as loan servicers provide support completely free of charge.
